- In my 30th year, the 5th year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity, I saw visions of God by the Kebar river with the exiles. I saw a whirlwind of fire containing phantasmagorical beasts holding a throne of sapphire supporting a man with the appearance of fire & glory of the Lord. #Ezk1
- He called me “Son of man.” I send you to the rebellious children of Israel who have transgressed. For they are impudent and stiff-necked. Do not be afraid to speak my words. He spread out a roll of a book on which was written lamentations and mourning. #Ezk2
- He gave me a scroll to eat and I did, & it tasted of honey. I was told to speak to the impudent & hardhearted of Israel & those in exile. I was made a watchman of Israel & was to warn the wicked and righteous. When they bind you, you shall not speak until I open your mouth. #Ezk3
- Son of man, take clay & make a model of Jerusalem & besiege it. Lie on your side for 390 days to bear the sins of Israel & 40 days to bear the sins of Judah. Bake your food using human dung for fuel. When I said that was unclean, he said that famine will come to Jerusalem. #Ezk4
- Take a knife to cut hair from your head. Divide it into 3 parts: 1 to be burned, a 2nd to smite with a knife, a 3rd to scatter to the wind, & keep a few hairs in your cloak. I, the Lord, will execute judgment on Israel with fire, sword, famine & exile. I will have no pity. #Ezk5
- The word of the Lord came saying, Son of man, prophesy against Israel. I will destroy your high places & images, & the dead shall be scattered before their idols. They shall be slain by pestilence or the sword so that you know that I am the Lord. Yet will I leave a remnant. #Ezk6
- Lord Yahweh says to the land of Israel, your ending is near: I will send my anger & you will know that I am the Lord. For your abominations, my wrath has come. He in the field shall die with the sword, and those in the city from famine & pestilence. Destruction shall come. #Ezk7
- I beheld one with the likeness of fire & amber. He showed me the wicked abominations of Jerusalem: the image of jealousy (temple idols); weeping for Tammuz (Adonis); worshipping the sun; branch to their nose. They provoke me to anger. Though they cry, I will not hear them. #Ezk8
- He summoned six men with weapons, and a man in linen who was instructed to mark the foreheads of those who decry the abominations in Jerusalem. They slayed old, young, children and women in order to erase the iniquity from the house of Israel. Those with marks were spared. #Ezk9
- The man in linen was told to take coals of fire from the wheels of a chariot with 4 cherubim & scatter them over the city. Each cherub had hands beneath their wings & 4 faces of a cherub, man, lion & eagle. The glory of the Lord rose as the cherubim spread their wings. #Ezk10
- The spirit lifted me up to the gate of the temple & showed me wicked men of the city, saying Prophesy! Your slain are the meat & the city is the pot. Those I have scattered will receive sanctuary. I will give them a heart: they shall be my people, & I shall be their God. #Ezk11
- Yahweh tells me, Son of man, pack your things & leave the city. Tell them I am your sign: leave & go into captivity. I will take the prince to Babylon but save some from the sword. They shall know I am the Lord. The proverb Days go by & visions fade will no longer be said. #Ezk12
- The Lord came to me, saying, Prophesy against false prophets who prophesy their imagination. They build no wall but cover it with plaster. It will fall in a storm & consume them. Woe to the prophetess who pollutes me for pieces of bread. I will deliver my people from them. #Ezk13
- Son of man, Tell those who worship idols to repent or I will cut them off from my people & destroy them. Then the house of Israel may be my people & I may be their God. The righteous will be saved, but I will send the sword, famine, beasts and pestilence for the wicked. #Ezk14
- Is the wood of the vine tree as good as the wood of the trees in the forest? No, it is used for fuel. So also will I give the people of Jerusalem as fuel. Even if they escape one fire, another will consume them, and I will make the land desolate for their trespasses. #Ezk15
- Jerusalem is analogized as a baby rescued at birth to become a beautiful woman adorned with finery. But she became a harlot who sacrificed & devoured her children & was more sinful than her sisters Samaria & Sodom. Yet I will remember our covenant made when you were young. #Ezk16
- The Lord put forth a parable of an eagle (NkB) that takes the highest branch of a cedar (Judah’s king) & plants it in a field to grow. Should it bloom or wither? Because the king broke his oath to NkB by asking for help from Egypt, he will remain captive & his army slain. #Ezk17
- A just man has a son who is wicked, worshipping idols, charging usury, defiling his neighbor’s wife & sleeping with menstruous women. Yet the son’s son is righteous. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, or vice versa. I will judge each according to his ways. #Ezk18
- A dirge for the princes of Israel is given by allegory. A lioness has cubs, one of which devoured men & is taken to Egypt, & a 2nd that also devoured men & is taken to Babylon. The lioness was taken to the wilderness. The lions may represent Josiah, Jehoahaz & Jehoiachin. #Ezk19
- Israel’s elders ask Ezekiel to inquire of the Lord, who says that I will not be inquired of by you. Yahweh recounts how he chose Israel, rescued them from Egypt, and gave them the land of milk and honey. For the sins of Israel, they will be scattered and the rebels purged. #Ezk20
- Son of man, say to Israel, I will draw my sword against all flesh to slaughter the wicked & righteous, so that you may know I am the Lord. For the king of Babylon, ruin. Exalt him that is low & abase him that is high. To the Ammonites for their insults, the sword is drawn. #Ezk21
- Will you judge the bloody city? Show all her sins: idols; oppressing the stranger, orphan & widow; defiling women; usury; lying prophets. I will scatter you among the heathens. You have become dross. I looked for a good man but found none, so I will consume them with fire. #Ezk22
- Samaria & Jerusalem are represented as two sisters who were prostitutes in Egypt. The elder defiled herself with Assyria, for which she was given to them & slain. Her sister whored with Babylon & was carried away. For their lewdness, they were stoned & their houses burnt. #Ezk23
- When NkB first assaults Jerusalem, the Lord utters a parable to Ezekiel of a pot cooking meat & bones, yet leaves rust: so also is the bloodstained city. Ezekiel’s wife dies but he is told not to grieve according to tradition. So also will it be for the children of Israel. #Ezk24
- Oracles on Ammon, Moab, Edom & the Philistines are given. The crimes of & punishments for each are stated. E.g., Ammon, by rejoicing at Israel’s misfortunes, is to be overrun by peoples of the East. I will execute judgment on them, so that you will know that I am the Lord. #Ezk25
- An oracle against Tyre is made. Because Tyre jeered at Jerusalem, NkB shall destroy her walls and towers, and her daughters shall be slain. I, the Lord, shall make a spoil of her riches, and the sound of her songs and harps will cease. Tyre will be a desolate city. #Ezk26
- A lament for Tyre: It is compared to a ship, with lumber from Lebanon & linen sails from Egypt. Trading of goods—jewels, spices, wool, oil—with many nations is described. But the ship will collapse, its sailors drown & its people wail. Tyre shall be a terror and destroyed. #Ezk27
- Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, though you are wise & rich, because you have said you are God I will send strangers to slay you. You have been covered with precious stones. Your wisdom is corrupted by splendor. But you have sinned & I will destroy you. I am the Lord. #Ezk28
- A prophecy against Egypt is made. Because Pharaoh has said, The river is mine, the land of Egypt shall be desolate and her cities made waste. It shall be uninhabited for 40 years and the Egyptians scattered. Because NkB has served me against Tyre, I will give Egypt to him. #Ezk29
- The Lord says, The sword shall come upon Egypt & the peoples in league with her. NkB shall fill Egypt with the slain. I will make the rivers dry & destroy their idols. The pomp of Egypt’s strength shall cease & Pharaoh’s arms broken. I will strengthen the arms of Babylon. #Ezk30
- Yahweh likens Pharaoh to a Lebanon cedar with roots nourished by water, foliage for birds to nest in, & animals to bear young under its bows. All the trees in Eden envied it. For its arrogance, nations uproot it & break its branches. I hurl it to hell. So also for Pharaoh. #Ezk31
- A lament for Pharaoh, a lion among nations: I will lay thy flesh in the mountains & water the land with thy blood. The sword of Babylon shall come upon you. Wail for Egypt; I shall make it desolate. They will lay among the uncircumcised, with Elam, Edom & their multitudes. #Ezk32
- The Lord says, I have sent a watchman. If you heed not the warning, blood is on your head. If the watchman blow not the trumpet, blood is on his head. If the wicked turns from evil, he shall live; if the righteous sin, he shall die. The land will be desolate for its sins. #Ezk33
- Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. You eat the fat & take the wool but feed not the flock. You do not care for the sheep but scatter them. I will seek out my flock & feed them in a good pasture. I will raise a shepherd over them: they shall dwell safely. #Ezk34
- A prophecy against Mount Seir & Edom is made. Because they have shed the blood of Israel, bloodshed shall pursue them. I will fill their mountains with the slain. Because they have blasphemed, I will make Mount Seir & Edom desolate. Then they shall know that I am the Lord. #Ezk35
- Say this to the mountains of Israel, made desolate for having borne the shame of heathens: You will grow rich & abundant. Though Israel profaned my name when I scattered them, I will gather them back for my sake, not theirs. You shall be my people, and I will be your God. #Ezk36
- The Lord asks the Son of man if dry bones can live. Behold, I will give breath to these bones, which are Israel. Two sticks, one for Judah and another for Ephraim, are joined. I will make them one nation, and David shall be king over them. With them I will make a covenant. #Ezk37
- Prophecy against Gog in the land of Magog: I will turn you back, & put hooks in your jaws, & all nations with you. You shall attack a land of unwalled villages & peaceful peoples. In my fury, I shall bring plague & bloodshed upon you, with hailstone, fire & brimstone. #Ezk38
- Gog will attack from the north. I will destroy them & send fire onto Magog. Birds & beasts shall devour their flesh. Israel shall gather their weapons & burn them for fuel. The bones of Gog’s dead will be placed in the valley of Hamon-gog, & the land will be cleansed. #Ezk39
- Ezekiel has a vision in his 25th year of exile, 14 years after the city’s fall. A bronzed man with a measuring rod takes him to a mountain in Israel. The sizes of buildings on the mountain, the walls, gates, inner courts, and rooms for priests & offerings are determined. #Ezk40
- The man takes Ezekiel into the temple. The doors, jambs, ulam (vestibule), hekal (main hall), & debir (sanctuary, or holy of holies) are measured. The courtyard, temple, galleries, & surrounding buildings are measured. Carved two-headed cherubim in the hekal are described. #Ezk41
- Sizes of courtyards, galleries and buildings & rooms for the priests are given. Orientations are specified. Duties of the priests—where offerings are placed & which garments worn—are specified. The entire area, surrounded by walls to separate holy and profane, is measured. #Ezk42
- The man took me to the east gate where the Lord’s glory came. The earth shined with his glory, & it filled the temple. The temple’s defilement by whoredom of kings is condemned. Dimensions of the altar, and instructions for burnt offerings & sprinkling of blood are given. #Ezk43
- The east gate through which the Lord came shall be shut. The prince enters & exits via a portico. The Levites who had strayed from the Lord may minister offerings but shall not enter the sanctuary. Rules for priests on dress, marriage, cleanliness & offerings are given. #Ezk44
- Within the country is an allotment of land ~8×6.5 mi^2 for the holy city. On the holy ground, ~265^2 m^2 are the temple and sanctuary that only the priests may enter. The prince enters via the portico and officiates. The priests handle the offerings and animal sacrifices. #Ezk45
- Priestly & princely duties to celebrate feasts of Passover, Tabernacles, Sabbath & New Moon are told. The priests prepare unblemished bulls & rams for sacrifice. The prince’s grain, holocaust & oil offerings, people’s inheritance rules, & the temple kitchen are described. #Ezk46
- He brought me to the temple. The waters rushed out the sides. We left by the East gate and walked 1000 cubits, & the water was to our knees. We walked a further 1000 cubits & it was to our necks. It was a river, feeding an estuary. Every living thing comes from the river. #Ezk47
- The division of the promised land in the areas around Jerusalem for the tribes of Israel and for the Prince and Levites is made. Within the consecrated 8×3 mi^2 region are temple projects with jobs for the tribes’ peoples. The city is Jehovah-shamma, Yahweh is there. #Ezk48
