- In the beginning was the Word, & the Word became flesh & dwelt among us. John, a voice crying in the wilderness, bare witness to the only begotten Son of God, who baptizes not with water but with the Holy Ghost. Jesus gathers his disciples & promises them a vision of heaven. #Jn1
- Jesus, at his mother’s urging, turns water into wine at a wedding in Cana. Going from Capernaum to Jerusalem, He drives the moneychangers from a temple with a scourge of small cords. Jesus says a sign will be a temple destroyed & raised again in 3 days. #Jn2
- Nicodemus, a Pharisee in the Jewish ruling council, asks how one can be born again. Jesus answers, of the spirit. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. John defers to Jesus. #Jn3
- On his way from Judaea to Samaria, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well & offers her living water. After staying there a few days, many Samaritans become followers. God is a spirit. One sows, & another reaps. He cures the son of a Capernaum ruler. #Jn4
- In Bethesda, Jesus cures an infirm man on the Sabbath, angering the Jews. Jesus answers that he does these things as the Son of God the Father, judge of the living & the dead. Jesus’s greater witness is not John the Baptist but the Father, as Moses wrote. #Jn5
- Jesus feeds 5000 men with 5 loaves & 2 fishes, & walks on water. The crowd follows Him to be fed, but Jesus speaks of the bread of God. This bread is my flesh: he that eats my flesh & drinks my blood, he shall live forever. The Jews grumble, & some followers depart. #Jn6
- At the Festival of Tabernacles in Galilee, Jesus says that the world hates me because I testify that its works are evil. I am from him & he sent me. People are divided about whether He is the Messiah. The Pharisees want to seize Him but Nicodemus demands that He be heard. #Jn7
- At a temple at the Mt. of Olives, Jesus says to those condemning an adulterous woman, he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Jesus tells the Pharisees that ye are of the devil, I am of the Father. The truth shall make you free. Before Abraham was, I am. Jesus flees. #Jn8
- Using clay made with spittle, Jesus anoints a blind man’s eyes (blind not from sin, but so that the works of God should be made manifest), making him see. The Pharisees question him: whereas I was blind, now I see. They are divided: Is Jesus a sinner, a prophet, or from God? #Jn9
- Jesus spoke the parable of the shepherd who, unlike the hireling, will lay down his life for his sheep. He relates this to His Father who loves me. At a Jerusalem temple during the Festival of Lights, Jesus says His works bear witness that he does this in my Father’s name. #Jn10
- In Bethany, Mary & Martha’s brother Lazarus dies. Jesus commands them to open the tomb. Lazarus emerges. He that believes in me, though he is dead, shall live. Caiaphas & the Sanhedrin plot to kill Jesus. It is better that one man die, than the nation be destroyed. #Jn11
- Mary anoints Jesus with expensive oils. Judas objects & Jesus rebukes him: the poor will be with you always. Jesus enters Jerusalem on an ass & people wave palms. A seed must die to make more. Become children of the light. I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. #Jn12
- At the last supper, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, even Simon, who objects. No servant is greater than his master. Jesus predicts His betrayal & identifies Judas with a sop of bread. That thou doest, do quickly. Jesus commands: Love one another. #Jn13
- Jesus comforts His disciples: My Father’s house has many rooms. I am the way, the truth, & the life. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do. If a man loves me, he will keep my words. The comforter is the Holy Ghost, sent by the Father. Peace I leave you; peace I give you. #Jn14
- Jesus says: I am the vine, ye are the branches that bear fruit. I command you to love one another. Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his friends. If they hate you, know that they hated me first without cause. I have chosen you, who are not of the world. #Jn15
- Jesus counsels His disciples that ye will have tribulation, that I will leave & ye shall weep, & I will return & your sorrow will be turned into joy. The Spirit of truth will come. I am not alone, because the Father is with me. #Jn16
- Jesus prays to the Father to glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee. He prays for the disciples, & all which shall believe in Him. They, and Jesus, are not of the world, but the world may know that the Father has sent Him. Thy word is truth. #Jn17
- Judas betrays Jesus, & He is arrested at a garden. Simon Peter cuts off the ear of the high priest’s servant. They take Him to Annas for questioning, who sends Him to Caiaphas, who sends Him to Pilate. He finds no fault but gives the crowd Barabbas. Peter denies Christ. #Jn18
- Pilate has Jesus scourged, crowned with thorns, & crucified in Golgotha. The cross reads: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. The cloak & coat of Jesus are divided by soldiers & His body is pierced. Jesus dies & is taken by Joseph of Arimathaea & Nicodemus for burial. #Jn19
- Mary Magdalene, Peter & the disciple Jesus loved find an empty tomb. Jesus appears to a weeping Mary &, later, to the disciples. Peace be with you. He grants them power to forgive sin by the Holy Spirit. Thomas, who was absent, doubts Jesus until He shows him His wounds. #Jn20
- Jesus, on the shore of Tiberias (the Sea of Galilee), appears to disciples in a boat & has them cast a net. They catch 153 fish. Asking Simon Peter if he loves Him, He says, Feed my sheep. The disciple Jesus loves testifies to Christ & writes this gospel. #Jn21
